Biography
As Spae-wife and Matriarch of the Robert Cochrane Tradition: ‘The People of Goda, The Clan of Tubal Cain,’ Shani Oates is a pilgrim and practitioner of the true esoteric mysteries of the arcane ‘Other and an Independent scholar and researcher of Ancestral Anthropology and Theology of the Myths, Gods and Archetypes preserved in the Cults and Crafts of Witchcraft and Folk-magics.
From the Highlands of Scotland I ‘live’ my tradition which informs and is i in turn by the expression of all devotional works. My world, infused with ancestral lore and history finds expression within a Faith that continues to inspire my journey as a mystic, and pilgrim.
Manifest through those works, my enquiries are given life through the written word in prose and verse, through visionary sketches, photography and therapeutic holism. Enriched by other complementary gnostic and Craft ordinations and initiations, my life-long study and research of theology, philosophy and anthropology has deepened my engagement through their Mysteries proper.

A2018 Revision. New information required an almost complete re-write of the previous edition which clarifies many of the conundrums featured in that 2017 volume. It is abridged and much redacted to allow the space for this recent evidence. It especially tackles the controversial claims of Cochrane’s alleged association with a rumoured Royal Windsor Coven. This fascinating history of the Clan is an invaluable insight into its development as a lived tradition in the 21st century. The revised edition also includes all the scans that featured separately, inititially sold alongside the first edition of ‘Tubal’s Mill’ as ‘Tubal’s Mill: Legend.’

A candid auto-biography spanning five decades of the Clan of Tubal Cain’s challenges since its establishment through its founder, Robert Cochrane. It opens a window upon those trials of time and tide that faced Robert Cochrane, Evan John Jones, Robin-the-dart & Shani Oates – This book describes the fateful history of a fully ‘lived’ Tradition: Throughout the past 50 years, that Clan has practised its customs and lore as One People, and has borne Three Magisters, Three Tanists and Two Maids. We are born, emergent as seekers unto life; we find love, acquire wisdom, mature in its sharing and then we die! Between these five points our purpose is engineered by Fate, to which we either surrender or resist. The friction between these opposing poles creates the dynamic of the causality of our lives, specifically the people and events within it. Our ‘mark’ patterns this interweaving as the accord between the dictates of want and desire, all those aspirations and disappointments we experience as we shift from one stage of this cyclic rose, to another. Just occasionally an exceptional person will enter our field of being and everything we thought we knew, everything we thought we wanted dissolves into the extraordinary gravitational pull that person exerts over our soul. Drawn inexorably within their own patterning of fate, we are but a supporting role to the greater picture, our own life a subtle cameo in the production of a universal vista, sensed as being greater than the sum of its parts. We have no choice.

This book explores historical and contemporary ideas of witchcraft through the perspective of the Clan of Tubal Cain – a closed Initiatory group aligned to the Shadow Mysteries within the Luciferian stream. Dual-authorship of the Clan of Tubal Cain’s Legacy defining 50 years of its organic evolution. Shani Oates edits and provides supplementary commentary to the original and previously unpublished ms written by Evan John Jones, parts of which were published in ‘The Roebuck in the Thicket.’ Jones was the Magister of the Clan of Tubal Cain, appointed by the Maid of CTC after Robert Cochrane’s death in 1966, serving his role faithfully until the 1998. His personal and complete account serves as an unprecedented Testament to the Will of Fate and Tenacity of Spirit. This work takes an unusual and unprecedented departure from the author’s previous publications in order to follow a more personal and introspective thread of the mysteries. It is a treatise very much a work in progress, albeit one that seeks to answer the oft’ quoted assertions regarding what the ‘People’ are and who is or is not Goda. Better yet, it traces latent clues, keys primed within the cumulative works of the former Magisters of the Clan of Tubal Cain, Robert Cochrane and Evan John Jones, to their origin and by default, their paradoxical conclusion. It constructs a template, a blueprint of their working ethos that feeds a further dynamic into praxis germane to their Cosmology. Most importantly, it asserts an identity through the focus of the work, given a contextual basis from which to grow and develop with impunity, confidant of its participation in and contribution to the vitality of a stream of living gnosis. Historical and more recent glosses are removed, peeled back, layer by layer to the very heart of a rich heritage, culturally, spiritually and magically. Many layers have filtered this core, and many feed it still. These pages cut right to the heart of the matter, dispelling misnomers and the countless misapprehensions regarding certain aspects of the Clans methodology, of its fundamental belief, of its structure, even of its traditions. None of this is, nor ever could be deemed secret, but it is sacred, at least to those who cherish this precious pearl of wisdom; for it represents a way of seeing and a way of being by which everyone may ‘know thyself’ and ‘be truly blessed.’ Most startling for many reading this book, will be the near heretical conclusions it draws from the hefty body of research engaged along this pilgrimage of self discover paralleling the intense discovery ‘of whom’ the ‘People’ are aligned to as a ‘personalised’ aspect of the divine. Some may find this material contentious, but it is hoped even more will defer that to ‘challenging’. For without challenge everyone remains unprovoked, thus failing to develop their full and true potential both as individuals and as a collective species seeking elevation through enlightenment. This demands the removal of trivial abstractions to allow the truth to shine though the dust of ages. Too long have agendas obfuscated the simple beauty and elegance of a Northern system, the source of which will generate much further study into areas hitherto unnoticed or ignored. It is hoped this innovative material will re-kindle those fires of enquiry, the pursuit of a life given purpose and meaning, wherein all roots are tended and acknowledged, wherein the fruit is shared, nourishing all who partake of its blessings and wherein seeds continue to flourish into the next generation and beyond.
