Silent Sentinel

Whither should we wander,
whither should we walk,
time and tide ere decay,
upon both sand and chalk.
Lo the Sentinel doth rise,
 in gloom and mist abound,
 to mark the signs of
 time above and tide below
within this hoary mound.
